Kalemyo lies in the Sagaing region of northwestern Myanmar, in a valley at the foot of the Chin hills near the Indian border. It is a market town and transport junction serving both the lowlands and the hill communities above.
The town is a staging point rather than a destination, and its market brings together lowland Burmese and Chin hill communities. The Chin hills rising to the west are the regional landscape, and the road toward the Indian border crossing passes through.
Shared vehicles and motorcycle taxis cover the town. Mountain roads into the Chin hills are slow and can be impassable in the rains, and travel in this region should be planned with current local advice.
The cool dry months from late in the year to early spring are much the most comfortable and the only reliable time for the hill roads. The monsoon brings very heavy rain and landslides.
