The town is a staging point, and the region around it is the draw. The Yuanyang rice terraces, a World Heritage site where Hani communities have carved terraces down entire mountainsides over centuries, lie to the south and are among the most spectacular agricultural landscapes anywhere, best at dawn when the flooded terraces catch the light.
Buses and taxis cover the town, and reaching Yuanyang takes a few hours by road. High-speed rail now serves the corridor toward Kunming.
The terraces are flooded and most photogenic from around November to March, which is the main season. Summers are warm and wet, and the altitude keeps the climate mild year-round.
