Kafrul is an administrative thana in northern Dhaka rather than a separate city, covering part of the cantonment area and neighbouring residential districts. It is dense and largely residential, with military installations occupying a substantial share of the ground.
There are no visitor attractions within the thana itself. Dhaka's old city with the Lalbagh fort, Ahsan Manzil and the boat-crowded Sadarghat riverfront lies well to the south, and the National Parliament building by Louis Kahn is closer.
Rickshaws, buses and ride-hailing cover the area, and an elevated metro line now serves part of northern Dhaka. Traffic in the city is among the heaviest anywhere and journeys take far longer than distances suggest.
The cool, dry months around the turn of the year are much the most comfortable. The monsoon brings heavy rain and flooding, and the pre-monsoon period is very hot and humid.
