Juazeiro do Norte lies in the Cariri region in the south of Ceará, in the Brazilian northeast. It is one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in the country, built around the memory of a single priest.
Padre Cícero, a priest whose following made the town, is commemorated by an enormous statue on the Horto hill above the city, and pilgrims climb to it in very large numbers on the main feast days. The basilica and his tomb are in the centre, and the Cariri region is a noted centre of woodcut printing and folk art.
The centre is walkable and the climb to the statue is done on foot by pilgrims or by taxi. Buses connect across the northeast, and the airport serves the region.
The pilgrimage seasons, particularly around the feast days, are when the town is at its most extraordinary though also most crowded. The climate is hot and dry, with limited rain in the earlier part of the year.

Brazil uses the real, and Portuguese is the language with little English spoken. The northeastern manner is warm and devout, and cards and instant transfers are widely accepted.
