Hengshui Lake, a large wetland reserve beside the town, is the principal attraction and an important stopover for migrating birds. The town itself is a working local centre, and Beijing and Jinan are both reachable by high-speed rail.
Buses and taxis cover the town, and the centre is compact. Reaching the lake reserve is straightforward by taxi, and rail connections run north and south across the plain.
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable, and autumn is the best season for birds at the lake. Summers are hot and humid, and winters on the plain are cold and dry.
