Jember lies in eastern Java between volcanoes and the Indian Ocean, a university and plantation town in tobacco and coffee country. The centre is compact, surrounded by farmland running up into the hills.
The town is best known within Indonesia for its annual fashion carnival, in which enormous costumes are paraded along the main street. Meru Betiri and Alas Purwo national parks on the south coast, with turtle beaches and surf, are the regional draws, and the Ijen crater with its blue sulphur flames is within reach to the east.
Becak and angkot cover the town, with ride-hailing available. Trains and buses connect to Surabaya and Banyuwangi, and reaching the parks needs a hired vehicle.
The dry season through the middle of the year is much the best for the coast and the volcanoes. The wet season brings heavy afternoon rain and difficult park roads.
