Iwaki is a large coastal city in southern Fukushima prefecture, made up of several former towns merged into one unusually extensive municipality. The centre is inland near the station, with fishing ports and beaches along the Pacific coast.
Spa Resort Hawaiians, a large indoor hot spring and pool complex built on a former coal mine, is the city's best-known attraction and has a notable place in local history. The coastline, the coal mining museum and the aquarium are the other main draws, and the city is well south of the exclusion zone associated with the nuclear accident.
The city is very spread out, so trains along the coast and buses are needed between the former towns. A car is genuinely helpful given the distances involved.
Spring and autumn are mild and the most comfortable, and the coast is pleasant in summer. Winters here are milder and sunnier than much of northern Japan.
