The port and the fishing fleet are the town's character, and it has hosted stopovers of round-the-world ocean races, which the waterfront commemorates. Balneário Camboriú just south, with its wall of towers along a curved beach and a cable car over the headland, is the region's resort centre, and Blumenau's German heritage is inland.
Buses cover the town and the coastal road connects the resorts. A car helps for reaching the quieter beaches north toward Bombinhas.
