Iligan sits on the northern coast of Mindanao on Iligan Bay, backed by steep forested hills. It is an industrial port city, and the rivers falling from the highlands behind it made it a centre of hydroelectric power and heavy industry.
The city is known as the city of majestic waterfalls, with a large number in the surrounding hills, of which Maria Cristina is the best known and also drives a major power station. Tinago Falls, reached down a long stairway into a gorge, is the more spectacular for visitors, and Lake Lanao lies inland.
Jeepneys and tricycles cover the city, and reaching the falls requires local transport or an arranged trip. Ferries and buses connect along the northern Mindanao coast toward Cagayan de Oro.
Northern Mindanao sits largely outside the main typhoon belt and has fairly even rainfall through the year. The drier months are better for the falls and the hill roads, though the falls are most powerful after rain.
