Ikeja is the capital of Lagos State and a district of the Lagos mainland rather than a separate city. It holds the state government offices and the international airport, and the Government Reserved Area is one of the city's more orderly residential quarters.
The district is administrative and commercial rather than a destination, though the Computer Village electronics market is one of the largest of its kind in Africa. The Afrobeat shrine associated with the Kuti family is in the area and remains a working music venue, and Lagos Island and the beaches lie south.
Shared buses and motorcycle taxis cover the district, and a rail line now serves part of the mainland. Traffic across Lagos is heavy for most of the day and journey times vary enormously.
The climate is tropical with a long rainy season through the middle of the year. The drier months around the turn of the year are more comfortable, though the harmattan can bring haze.
