Ichihara is the largest municipality by area in Chiba prefecture, stretching from a heavily industrial coast on Tokyo Bay deep into the rural hills of the Boso peninsula. The coastal districts near the railway are practical and commuter-oriented, while the interior is quiet farming and forest country.
The Yoro valley in the south is known for its gorges, waterfalls and autumn colour. Along the Yoro river is a cliff whose exposed layers define the Chibanian, a unit of the geological time scale named after Chiba. A small local railway through rice fields to the interior is a pleasure in itself.
JR trains run along the bay coast toward Chiba and Tokyo, and the rural Kominato line heads inland toward the Yoro valley. Buses are infrequent in the hills, where a car is useful.
Autumn is the highlight, with maple colour in the Yoro valley in late November, and spring is mild with cherry blossom. Summers are hot and humid, and winters are mild and mostly dry.
