Ica lies in a green valley in the coastal desert of southern Peru, surrounded by vineyards and some of the largest sand dunes in South America. Most visitors stay either in the city centre or at the small oasis of Huacachina just outside it.
Huacachina, a lagoon ringed by palm trees and towering dunes, is the base for dune buggy rides and sandboarding, especially at sunset. The valley is the heartland of pisco, and many bodegas offer tastings, while the Paracas reserve and the Nazca Lines are within day-trip range.
Taxis and mototaxis cover the city and the short hop to Huacachina. Comfortable long-distance buses along the Pan-American Highway connect to Lima, Paracas and Nazca.
Ica is sunny and dry almost all year. As a Southern Hemisphere desert city, it is hottest from December to March, while the cooler months from June to September are comfortable by day with chilly nights.
