Hulunbuir is a vast prefecture in the far northeast of Inner Mongolia, and the entry covers its administrative centre at Hailar. The town sits where grassland meets the forested slopes of the Greater Khingan range, near the Russian and Mongolian borders.
The Hulunbuir grassland is among the most celebrated in China and is the reason to come, at its best in the short green summer. The border town of Manzhouli with its Russian-influenced architecture, and the forests and reindeer-herding communities of the Khingan range, are the other regional draws.
