Hechi lies in the northwest of Guangxi in southern China, in classic karst country where limestone towers rise from narrow river valleys. The prefecture centre is modest, and the region is largely rural and heavily populated by Zhuang, Yao and Miao communities.
The karst landscape is the main draw, and the region holds some of the deepest caves and largest sinkholes in China, several of which are open to visitors. Bama county within the prefecture is known nationally for the longevity of its residents and attracts domestic health tourism as a result.
Buses and taxis serve the town, and reaching the caves and river valleys requires a hired car over winding roads. Rail connections run toward Nanning and Guiyang.
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Summers are hot and humid with heavy rain that fills the rivers, and winters are mild but damp and often misty over the karst.
