Hancheng sits above the Yellow River in eastern Shaanxi, where the river forms the border with Shanxi province. It is unusual for having kept a substantial old quarter of traditional courtyard buildings alongside the modern town that grew up beside it.
The old town's Ming and Qing streets and the temple to the historian Sima Qian, who was born here, are the principal sights and the reason the city is known nationally. The preserved Dang Family Village outside the town is among the better surviving examples of traditional courtyard architecture in the region.
The old quarter is compact and best explored on foot. Buses and taxis link it to the modern town and the railway station, and reaching the outlying villages needs a taxi or arranged car.
