The Elbphilharmonie, a glass wave set atop a brick warehouse, is the city's landmark and its public plaza is free to visit. The Speicherstadt warehouse district and the adjoining Kontorhaus quarter form a World Heritage site, Miniatur Wunderland there is the largest model railway in the world, and the Sunday fish market at Altona is a Hamburg institution.
Rapid transit and the harbour ferries, which use ordinary transport tickets, cover the borough. The centre and Speicherstadt are walkable, and the ferry along the Elbe is the cheapest harbour tour available.
Late spring through early autumn is much the most pleasant, with long daylight and the harbour at its best. Winters are grey, wet and windy rather than severely cold.
