Haifa is Israel's principal port, built up the slopes of Mount Carmel above a bay in the north of the country. The city runs in tiers from the port at the bottom through the German Colony to the residential Carmel ridge at the top.
The Bahá'í terraces, nineteen garden levels descending the mountain in a straight line to the golden-domed shrine, are a World Heritage site and the city's defining image. The German Colony below, the Stella Maris monastery on the ridge, and the coastal city of Akko with its Crusader remains across the bay are the other draws.
A short underground funicular called the Carmelit climbs the mountain, supplemented by buses and cable car. Trains run along the coast to Tel Aviv and Akko, and the tiers mean walking between levels involves serious gradients.
Spring and autumn are much the most comfortable. Summers on the coast are hot and humid, and winters are mild and wet.
