Gebze is an industrial city in Kocaeli province on the northern shore of the Gulf of İzmit, at the eastern end of greater Istanbul. It is home to factories, technology parks and universities, with a small historic core and a quieter coastal area at Eskihisar.
The Ottoman mosque complex of Çoban Mustafa Pasha, with fine tilework, is the historic centrepiece. At Eskihisar on the gulf, a Byzantine castle and the house museum of the painter Osman Hamdi Bey overlook the water, and a memorial marks the traditional site of Hannibal's grave.
Gebze is the eastern terminus of the Marmaray commuter rail, which runs under the Bosphorus to the European side of Istanbul. High-speed trains stop here, and buses and dolmuş cover local routes.
