    Where to stay

    Neighborhood guide

Gaza City lies on the Mediterranean coast of the Gaza Strip, on a low ridge above the shoreline, and is the largest city in the Palestinian territories. It has been continuously settled for several thousand years, and its old city, the Rimal district and the port area at the shore were its principal quarters. The city has been extensively damaged in the ongoing conflict, and much of the built environment described in older sources no longer stands.

    What to see

    Timed to the light

Gaza's historic fabric included the Great Omari Mosque, built on a site used for worship since antiquity, and the Church of Saint Porphyrius, among the oldest churches anywhere still in use. The archaeological site of the ancient harbour at Anthedon lies north of the city. Many of these sites have been damaged or destroyed, and this entry is a record of the city's heritage rather than a guide to visiting it.

    Transit notes

Movement into, out of and within the Gaza Strip is severely restricted and depends on crossings that are frequently closed. Independent travel is not possible for most people, and access for journalists and humanitarian staff is controlled and limited.

    Best time to visit

    Seasons & timing

The climate is Mediterranean, with hot dry summers and mild wetter winters, moderated by the sea. Practical travel advice is not meaningful here: the territory is not open to visitors, and anyone with a professional reason to travel should follow the guidance of their own government and organisation.

    Currency & language

    🇵🇸 ILS

Palestinian Territory uses the ILS, calling code +970.

The Israeli new shekel is the currency in general use, and Arabic is the everyday language. Banking, cash availability and communications are all severely disrupted, and conditions change rapidly.
