Gaomi is a county-level city in eastern Shandong, on the flat agricultural plain between Weifang and Qingdao. The centre is a compact modern grid serving a large farming hinterland, and the surrounding countryside is intensively cultivated.
The city is best known as the birthplace of the novelist Mo Yan, whose fiction is set in a version of this countryside, and literary visitors come for that association. Local folk crafts including paper cuts and clay figures are a regional tradition, and the flat farmland around the town is the landscape his work describes.
Buses and inexpensive taxis cover the city and the centre is walkable. The high-speed line between Jinan and Qingdao stops here, which makes the coast and the provincial capital both easy day trips.
