Ganja is the second city of Azerbaijan, in the west of the country on the plain below the Lesser Caucasus. The centre is laid out around a large square with a mosque and caravanserais from the Safavid period, and tree-lined avenues run outward.
The mausoleum of the poet Nizami Ganjavi, who was born here and is a central figure in Persian literature, stands outside the city and is the principal monument. The Bottle House, a building faced entirely in glass bottles, is an eccentric local landmark, and Lake Göygöl in the mountains above the city is the regional natural draw.
The centre is walkable and taxis cover the city. Trains and buses connect to Baku in several hours, and reaching Göygöl requires a taxi or hired car.
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable, and the mountain lake is best in the warmer months. Summers on the plain are hot and dry, and winters are cold.
