    Where to stay

    Neighborhood guide

Florence's historic centre is compact and almost entirely walkable, contained within the line of the old walls on the north bank of the Arno. Oltrarno on the south bank is quieter and more workshop-oriented, and is where many visitors now prefer to stay.

    What to see

    Timed to the light

The Uffizi and the Accademia hold the defining collections of Renaissance art and both require booking well in advance. Brunelleschi's dome can be climbed for the best view over the city, the Ponte Vecchio still carries its goldsmiths, and the Boboli gardens behind the Pitti Palace give space away from the crowds.

    Transit notes

The centre is walkable and largely closed to traffic, which is much the best way to see it. Trains connect to Rome, Bologna and Venice quickly, and a car is a genuine liability within the city.

    Best time to visit

    Seasons & timing

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable and the light on the city is at its best. Summer is very hot and extremely crowded, and winter is quiet, cool and much the easiest time for the museums.

    Currency & language

Italy uses the EUR, calling code +39.

Italy uses the euro, and Italian is the everyday language with English widely spoken in the centre. Meals are unhurried, a coffee at the bar costs less than at a table, and cards are widely accepted.
