Fenghuang is an old riverside town in western Hunan, built along the Tuo River with stilt houses standing over the water and a stretch of surviving town wall. The old town is the destination and is compact enough to walk, with newer development set back behind it.
The stilt houses along the river, the covered bridges and the narrow flagstone lanes are the reason people come, and the town is at its most atmospheric early in the morning before the day visitors arrive. The surrounding region is home to Miao and Tujia communities whose crafts and dress are part of the town's character, and evening lighting along the river is a spectacle in itself.
The old town is pedestrian and best explored on foot, with small boats working the river. Buses connect to Jishou for onward rail, and Zhangjiajie with its sandstone pillars is within reach for a longer trip.
Spring and autumn are mild and much the most comfortable, and autumn brings clear light along the river. Summers are hot, humid and busy with domestic visitors, and winters are cold and damp but far quieter.
