Fatih is the historic peninsula of Istanbul, the walled city of Byzantium and Ottoman Constantinople, and is a district rather than a separate city. Sultanahmet at its eastern tip holds the great monuments, while the rest of the district is dense, residential and much less visited.
Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Topkapı Palace and the Basilica Cistern are all within a short walk of each other at the eastern end. The Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar, the Süleymaniye Mosque on its hill, and the surviving Theodosian land walls at the district's western edge are the other essentials.
Trams run along the peninsula and the monumental core is best covered on foot. Ferries from Eminönü cross the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn, and traffic within the district is heavy and best avoided.
Spring and autumn are much the most comfortable and the least crowded. Summers are hot, humid and very busy, and winters are cold and damp but quiet at the monuments.
