Enshi is the capital of the Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in the mountainous southwest of Hubei province. The city sits in a green river valley, and it is the base for exploring some of central China's most spectacular karst scenery.
The Enshi Grand Canyon offers cliffside walkways past sheer limestone walls and a slender stone pillar rising from the gorge. The prefecture also holds Tenglong Cave, one of China's largest cave systems, and a reconstructed chieftain's town presents Tujia culture and architecture.
