This entry covers the Desnianskyi district in the northeast of Kyiv rather than a separate town, a large residential area of Soviet-era housing estates. It is dense and residential, with the Desenka river arm and Trukhaniv woodland forming its western edge.
There are no visitor attractions within the district, which is housing and local commerce. Kyiv's historic centre, with Saint Sophia's cathedral and the Lavra monastery caves, lies southwest and is reachable by metro, and the Dnipro islands and beaches are closer.
A metro line runs through the district and is the main link to the centre, supplemented by trams and buses. Distances between housing blocks are large but the ground is flat.
Late spring and early autumn are the mildest, and the riverside woodland is at its best then. Summers are warm, and winters are cold with reliable snow and short daylight.
