The city is agricultural and administrative rather than a destination. The head works of the South-North Water Transfer Project and the Danjiangkou reservoir that feeds it are the region's major engineering feature, and Nanyang nearby has associations with the physician Zhang Zhongjing, a foundational figure in Chinese medicine.
