Delmas is a commune of the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area rather than a separate city, running along the main road of the same name that climbs from the lower city toward Pétionville. It is largely residential and commercial, with the numbered side streets off the main road serving as the local addressing system.
There are no conventional visitor sights within the commune, which is part of the working fabric of the capital. The city's museums and historic centre lie downhill toward the bay, and the higher ground toward Pétionville has the concentration of restaurants and hotels.
Shared taxis and the painted minibuses known as tap-taps run the length of the main road and are the standard way to move. Traffic on the corridor is heavy for most of the day, and journey times vary a great deal.
The climate is tropical, hot and humid, with a wetter period through the middle of the year and a hurricane season in the later summer and autumn. The cooler, drier months around the turn of the year are the most comfortable.
