Damanhur is a Nile Delta city in Beheira governorate, northwest of Cairo on the route toward Alexandria. It is an agricultural and administrative centre in intensively farmed delta country.
The city is a working provincial centre rather than a destination, and the delta's canals and farmland are its setting. Alexandria with its library and Mediterranean corniche is around an hour north, and Cairo is a couple of hours southeast.
Shared microbuses and taxis cover the city, and the centre is walkable. The main rail line between Cairo and Alexandria stops here, which makes both easy day trips.
The cooler months from autumn to early spring are the most comfortable. Delta summers are hot and humid, and spring can bring dusty khamsin winds.

Egypt uses the Egyptian pound, and Arabic is the language with limited English outside the tourist centres. Bargaining is normal in markets, and cash is used for most transactions.
