Cuíto is the capital of Bié province on Angola's central plateau, at altitude in the middle of the country. The town was severely damaged during the civil war and much of it has been rebuilt, laid out on a grid around a central square.
The town is administrative and commercial rather than a destination, and its recent history is the dominant fact about it. The central plateau landscape of miombo woodland and the headwaters of several major rivers, including tributaries feeding the Okavango, are the regional interest.
Taxis and minibuses cover the town, and the centre is walkable. Road connections across the plateau are long, and the airport provides links to Luanda.
The plateau altitude gives a milder climate than the coast, with a distinct rainy season through the southern summer. The cooler dry months in the middle of the year are much easier for road travel.
