Coatzacoalcos lies on the Gulf coast of Veracruz at the mouth of the river of the same name, on the narrowest part of Mexico between the two oceans. It is an oil and petrochemical port, with a beach running along the seafront in the centre.
The city is industrial rather than a destination, with the beach and the malecón the main local recreation. The Isthmus of Tehuantepec, the narrow land bridge between the Gulf and the Pacific, is the region's geography, and the Olmec heartland with its colossal-head sites lies to the west.
