Ciudad del Este sits at the triple frontier where Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina meet, on the Paraná opposite Foz do Iguaçu. It is a frenetic commercial city built on cross-border trade, with electronics arcades filling the centre.
The Itaipu dam, for decades the largest hydroelectric plant in the world, sits upstream and offers tours of a genuinely staggering scale. The Iguazú Falls are a short drive across the bridge into Brazil or Argentina, and the shopping itself is the reason many Brazilians cross.
The centre is walkable but crowded, and taxis cover the rest. The Friendship Bridge to Brazil is heavily congested, and border formalities are worth allowing time for.
Winter and the shoulder seasons are more comfortable, as summers here are extremely hot and humid. The falls are impressive year-round and fullest after summer rain.
