The Great Pyramid of Cholula is the largest pyramid by volume anywhere in the world, now grassed over with a Spanish church built on its summit, and tunnels dug by archaeologists run through its interior. The view from the church takes in the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, and the town is said to have a church for every day of the year.
The town centre and the pyramid are walkable, and the climb to the church is short but steep. Buses and colectivos reach Puebla in around half an hour.
The dry months from late autumn to spring are the most comfortable and give the clearest volcano views. The summer rains bring heavy afternoon storms.
