Jinju Fortress is the site of a celebrated siege during the Japanese invasions of the sixteenth century, and the pavilion above the river commemorates it. The lantern festival held on the river each autumn, when thousands of illuminated lanterns float on the water, is among Korea's most striking events, and the city is known for a distinctive style of bibimbap.
The fortress and riverside are walkable from the centre, and buses cover the city. Rail and express buses connect to Busan and Seoul.
Autumn is much the best, coinciding with the lantern festival and good colour. Summers are hot and humid with a monsoon period, and winters are cold but relatively mild for Korea.
