The bay and the fishing fleet are the town's defining feature. The Callejón de Huaylas and the peaks of the Cordillera Blanca, including Huascarán, lie inland to the east, and the Chavín de Huántar archaeological site is reachable from the same road.
Taxis and combis cover the town, and the Pan-American highway runs along the coast through it. Buses climb inland toward Huaraz and the mountains.
The coast is dry year-round with a persistent grey sea mist through the middle of the year. The southern summer is sunnier and warmer, and is also the best window for the coastal desert.
