Chernihiv is one of the oldest cities in Ukraine, on the Desna river in the north, and was a leading principality of Kyivan Rus. The historic core sits on the high riverbank known as the Val, with parks, churches and old cannons overlooking the river.
The Transfiguration Cathedral on the Val is among the oldest surviving churches in Ukraine, and nearby churches and monasteries, including cave passages dug beneath a hillside, reflect the city's medieval importance. The city was besieged and damaged during Russia's full-scale invasion, and some sites bear visible scars.
Trolleybuses, buses and minibuses cover the city, and the historic centre is walkable. Kyiv is roughly two hours away by road or rail. Check current travel advice before visiting northern Ukraine.
Late spring and early autumn are the most pleasant, with mild weather for walking the riverside parks. Summers are warm, and winters are cold with regular snow.
