The city is industrial rather than a destination, though the riverside and the Vereshchagin house museum, home of the war artist born here, are the local attractions. The Kirillo-Belozersky monastery, an enormous fortified complex on a lake, lies within reach and is among the most impressive in northern Russia.
Buses and trolleybuses cover the city. Rail connections run toward Vologda, Saint Petersburg and Moscow, and the Volga-Baltic waterway passes through the region.
Summer is short, mild and much the best for the northern lakes and monasteries. Winters are long and cold with heavy snow and short daylight.
