Chapecó is the main city of western Santa Catarina in southern Brazil, a planned and orderly regional centre built on agribusiness, particularly poultry and pork processing. The central avenue and the area around the cathedral hold most hotels, restaurants and shops.
The city is known worldwide through its football club, whose squad was almost entirely lost in an air crash, an event that drew an outpouring of international sympathy, and its stadium holds a memorial. The surrounding rolling farmland reflects strong Italian and German immigrant heritage.
Buses and taxis cover the city, and the centre is easy to walk. A regional airport connects to São Paulo and other Brazilian cities, and roads run west toward Argentina.
