This Chaoyang is a prefecture-level city in western Liaoning, inland from the coast on the Daling River, and should not be confused with the Beijing district of the same name. The centre is a compact modern grid, with hills rising around the edges of the built-up area.
The area is internationally known among palaeontologists for exceptionally well-preserved fossils of early birds and feathered dinosaurs, and the local museums built around those finds are the city's distinctive draw. Phoenix Mountain on the edge of town carries old temple buildings and is the main walking destination.
Buses and inexpensive taxis cover the city, and the centre is compact enough to walk. Rail and road connections run toward Shenyang and Beijing, and reaching the fossil sites outside the city needs arranged transport.
The climate is continental and dry, with warm summers and long, cold winters. Late spring and early autumn are the most comfortable, though spring can bring dust blown in from the north.
