    Where to stay

    Neighborhood guide

Catania sits on the eastern coast of Sicily directly beneath Etna, and was rebuilt in a uniform baroque style after an earthquake levelled it, largely in dark volcanic stone. The centre around Piazza del Duomo is compact, with the fish market immediately behind it.

    What to see

    Timed to the light

La Pescheria, the morning fish market spilling through arches behind the cathedral square, is the most vivid thing in the city. Etna dominates the horizon and can be visited by cable car and jeep from Rifugio Sapienza, the Roman theatre sits half-buried among later buildings, and the baroque of nearby Noto and Ragusa is a World Heritage group.

    Transit notes

The centre is walkable and buses reach Etna and the coast, with a circular railway around the volcano's base. The airport is unusually close to the centre.

    Seasons & timing

Spring and autumn are much the most comfortable, and are also the best for climbing on Etna. Summers are very hot, and winters are mild at sea level with snow on the volcano.

    Currency & language

    🇮🇹 EUR

Italy uses the EUR, calling code +39.

Italy uses the euro, and Italian is the everyday language with a strong Sicilian dialect and limited English. Meals are unhurried, and cash is still useful in the markets.
