Cascavel is a planned city in western Paraná, laid out in the twentieth century on a grid with wide avenues, and serves as the commercial centre for a large agricultural region. The centre is compact and businesslike, with residential districts spreading outward.
The city is an agribusiness hub rather than a destination in itself, with parks and a zoo as the main local attractions. It is, however, the usual staging point for the Iguaçu Falls to the west, and the Itaipu dam on the Paraguayan border is also within reach.
The grid layout makes driving straightforward and buses cover the city adequately. The centre is walkable, and the road west to the falls takes a couple of hours.
The subtropical climate gives warm, wet summers and mild winters that can turn genuinely cold at night. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable, and the falls are at their most dramatic after summer rain.
