    Where to stay

    Neighborhood guide

Camagüey is in central Cuba and is unusual among Spanish colonial cities for its deliberately irregular street plan, laid out as a maze said to confuse raiding pirates. The historic centre is a World Heritage site of squares, churches and pastel houses.

    What to see

    Timed to the light

The tangle of plazas and lanes is the attraction in itself, and getting lost is more or less the intended experience. The large clay tinajones, water jars that are the city's emblem, stand in courtyards throughout, and Plaza San Juan de Dios with its colonial hospital is the best-preserved square.

    Transit notes

The historic centre is walkable, though the irregular layout makes navigation genuinely difficult. Bicycle taxis are the characteristic local transport, and the city is on the main road and rail line through the island.

    Seasons & timing

The cooler, drier months from late autumn to spring are much the most comfortable. Summers are hot and humid, and the hurricane season runs through late summer into autumn.

    Currency & language

    🇨🇺 CUP

Cuba uses the CUP, calling code +53.

Cuba's currency arrangements have changed repeatedly and are worth checking before travelling, and Spanish is the language. Cash is essential as card acceptance is limited and international cards issued by some banks do not work at all.
