Brest stands on the Bug river at Belarus's western border with Poland, and is the main crossing point for road and rail traffic between them. The centre is walkable with a long pedestrianised main street, and the fortress lies at the confluence west of the city.
The Brest Fortress, defended at length in the opening days of the German invasion, is preserved as an enormous memorial complex and is among the most significant war monuments in the former Soviet Union. The city's gas lamps, still lit by hand each evening by a lamplighter, are a distinctive local tradition.
The centre is compact and walkable and buses cover the wider city. The railway station is a major international junction, and the track gauge changes here, so trains crossing the border are re-gauged.
