Botshabelo lies east of Bloemfontein in the Free State and was established under apartheid as a resettlement township, growing very large as people were relocated there. It remains largely residential, with limited local employment and heavy commuting.
The town is residential and its history is the significant thing about it, as one of the largest such resettlement sites in the country. Bloemfontein's museums and the Naval Hill park with its city view lie west, and the sandstone country of the eastern Free State is further out.
