Boma stands on the north bank of the Congo river near its mouth, in the far west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was the colonial capital before Kinshasa and retains buildings from that period, including prefabricated metal structures shipped from Europe.
The colonial-era buildings, including a metal house associated with Stanley, and the enormous baobab in the town are its distinctive features. The Congo estuary and the mangrove reserve at its mouth are the surrounding landscape, and Matadi, the country's main seaport, lies upstream.
Shared taxis and motorcycle taxis cover the town. The road to Matadi and on to Kinshasa is the main link, and travel in the region needs careful planning and current advice.
The dry season from around May to September is much easier for travel and less humid. The rainy season brings heavy downpours and difficult roads.
