Bochum sits in the middle of the Ruhr, the former coal and steel region of western Germany, and has reinvented itself around its university and cultural institutions. The centre around the main station and the Bermuda3eck district holds most of the nightlife, with residential districts and green space spreading outward.
The German Mining Museum, with its winding tower and underground demonstration workings, is the city's principal sight and explains the region's history directly. The city has a long-running theatre tradition and a large botanical garden attached to the university, and the surrounding Ruhr industrial heritage trail links former collieries across the region.
Trams, light rail and regional trains connect the city and the neighbouring Ruhr cities frequently, and the whole conurbation functions as one transport network. The centre is walkable and the region is unusually well provided with cycle paths built on former railway lines.
