Blumenau lies in the Itajaí valley in Santa Catarina and was founded by German settlers, whose influence is still visible in the architecture and the surnames. The centre has a number of half-timbered buildings, some original and some later reconstructions in the same style.
The city hosts one of the largest Oktoberfest celebrations outside Germany, which fills the city in October and is by far its busiest period. The brewery culture, the German-influenced centre and the forested valley around the city are the year-round draws.
