Bielefeld lies in eastern North Rhine-Westphalia at a gap in the Teutoburg Forest ridge, which runs through the city. The centre is compact, with the old town on one side and the university district spreading west.
Sparrenburg castle on the ridge above the city is the landmark, with a tower and underground casemates open to visitors. The wooded ridge itself gives good walking directly from the city, and Bielefeld is the subject of a long-running German internet joke claiming it does not exist, which the city has embraced with some humour.
A light rail network covers the city and the centre is walkable. Trains connect to Hanover and the Ruhr, and the forest trails start at the edge of the built-up area.
Late spring through early autumn is the most pleasant, with good walking on the ridge. Winters are grey and damp rather than severely cold.
