Białystok lies in the far northeast of Poland near the Belarusian border, in the Podlaskie region. The centre is arranged around the Branicki Palace and its formal gardens, and the city has long been a meeting point of Polish, Belarusian, Lithuanian and Jewish cultures.
The Branicki Palace, sometimes called the Versailles of Podlasie, and its baroque gardens are the city's set piece. Ludwik Zamenhof, the creator of Esperanto, was born here and the city commemorates that, and the Białowieża Forest, Europe's last great primeval woodland with its wild bison, is within reach to the south.
Buses cover the city and the centre is walkable. Trains reach Warsaw in around two and a half hours, and reaching Białowieża needs a car or bus.
Late spring through early autumn is much the most pleasant, and the forest is best then. Winters are cold with reliable snow, which has its own appeal for tracking bison.
