    Where to stay

    Neighborhood guide

Bergen sits among seven mountains on Norway's western coast, at the head of a fjord system. Bryggen, the row of wooden gabled trading houses along the old harbour, is the historic core, with the fish market opposite and residential streets climbing steeply behind.

    What to see

    Timed to the light

Bryggen is a World Heritage site, the surviving quarter of the Hanseatic trading port, and its leaning wooden alleys are the city's signature. The Fløibanen funicular climbs to a viewpoint over the city and fjords, the composer Grieg's villa at Troldhaugen is nearby, and Bergen is the main gateway to the western fjords including Sognefjord and Hardangerfjord.

    Transit notes

The centre is compact and walkable, with a light rail line to the airport. Fjord cruises and the Bergen Railway to Oslo, one of the great scenic rail journeys, both start here.

    Seasons & timing

Late spring through early autumn gives long daylight and the best fjord weather. Bergen is among the wettest cities in Europe with rain possible in any month, so waterproofs are not optional.
